The purpose of this web page is to show what the Word of God teaches about the second coming of Jesus Christ, the rapture of the elect of God and the Day of the Lord. This teaching will show that scripture points to a pre-wrath rapture as opposed to a pre-tribulation rapture. Pre-wrath is a title recently given to this view, but the view itself is as old as the church age.
It is not My intention to personally attack those who believe in a pre-trib rapture. There are many godly Christians who support the pre-trib view. There are many bible scholars and end-time prophesy teachers whom I respect, yet I believe they have missed the Word of Gods teaching concerning the timing of the rapture.
This pre-wrath view will show that the second coming is a series of events which begins with heavenly signs, includes the rapture of the church, and the Day of the Lord
All scripture reference is King James Version (KJV) unless otherwise stated.
There are several popular views concerning the timing of the rapture (from the Latin word rapturo after the Greek harpadzo,"seize, catching away"). The three major views are the pre-tribulation view, The mid-tribulation view and the post-tribulation view. The pre-tribulation view places the rapture just prior to the beginning of what is commonly called the seven year tribulation period. The mid-tribulation view places it in or near the middle of the tribulation. The post-tribulation view would place it after or at the end of the seven year period. Then there is also what I will call the biblical-view. This view is non-denominational and is based only on the word of God and not on the traditions of any church organization or man.
I am most concerned with the pre-tribulation view because I believe it puts many Christians in great danger. What if the view that the church will be raptured out before any tribulation, before the anti-christ, before great persecution, is wrong? They would enter this period in shock, unprepared. They would have little faith to stand on because it was promised [by man] that they would not have to endure this terrible time. Could an army successfully train for a battle that it was promised it would never have to fight? What if these christians looking for Jesus to come first were suddenly confronted by the anti-christ claiming to be Jesus or the messiah? Remember He will have all power to perform signs and wonders,"For there shall arise false Christ, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders, insomuch that if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect." (Matt.24:24.) "Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and lying wonders" (2 Thessalonians 2:9.) His false prophet would also have these powers in his sight, "And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men. And deceiveth them on the earth by means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast" (Rev.13:13-14) Their world, their beliefs and their faith would be greatly shaken.
The purpose of this web page is to show that the word of God teaches that the church will go through a time of great tribulation, yet escape Gods wrath.
In chapter 24:16-20 Jesus warns the inhabitants of Ju-da`-ea to flee when they see the abomination of desolation. Then He warns of Great tribulation, "For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time,no,nor ever shall be." (Matt 24:21)
In 70 A.D. Jerusalem was surrounded and taken siege by Vespasian and his son Titus. The Tribulation of those times were unequalled in jewish history,Yet it was not the great tribulation period of which Jesus spoke of. This future tribulation would be so terrible that"...except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect`s [ chosen ones] sake those days shall be shortened."(verse 22) In verse 23-26 he again warns of anti-christ and false prophets. In fact this is the third warning of such, see verses 5 and 11.
In verse 29,Jesus say`s,"Immediately AFTER THE TRIBULATION of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory."....
Pretribulationism teaches that this coming is not the rapture, but is describing the physical return of Christ at the end of the seven year period. The pre-trib view contends that the second coming and the rapture are two separate events. We will show that the rapture is only a part of a whole event called the second coming, which will consist of heavenly signs, the rapture and the day of the Lords wrath.
In 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 and 5;1-2 the apostle Paul ties the second coming, the rapture and the day of the Lord all together.[4:13] "But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.[14] For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.[15] For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the COMING. of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.[16] For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:[17] Then we which are alive and remain shall be CAUGHT UP together with them in the clouds,to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.[18] Wherefore comfort one another with these words.[5:1] But of the times and the seasons, brethren,ye have no need that I write unto you.[2] For yourselves know perfectly that THE DAY OF THE LORD so cometh as a thief in the night."Notice that although Paul is talking about one continuous event, He includes in it, the COMING OF THE LORD in verse 15, the RAPTURE in verse17, (rapture comes from the latin form of the greek "harpadzo" which means" to seize or a catching away" where the KJV uses " caught up"),and THE DAY OF THE LORD in the second verse of chapter five. Some would think that because of the change of chapters, Paul has changed the subject, but in the greek this was one continuous writing. Chapters and verses were added much later by modern translators.
Here, in their proper order, are the key pieces found in Matthew 24:
Now let us see how these pieces fit together with the same key pieces found in the book of Revelation, chapter six. When the first seal is opened, John saw ..."a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer." [Rev 6:1] Most bible scholars agree this represents the anti-christ. "And when he had opened the second seal....there went out another horse that was red: and power was given him that sat theron to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given him a great sword." [3,4] This red horse represents war. "And when he had opened the third seal....a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand" [5,6] Because a set of scales were used to measure out the grain, this black horse represents famine. "And when he had opened the fourth seal....a pale (greek,chloros-"green") horse: and his name that sat on him was Death"....[7,8] These Horseman were given power over a fourth part of the earth. "And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the Word of God, and for the testimony which they held....and it was said unto them, that they should rest yet for a little season, until their fellowservants also and their brethren, that should be killed as they were, should be fulfilled."[9-11]. When the sixth seal was opened,"....there was a great earhquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood; And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth....And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places. And the Kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and every bond man, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains; And said to the mountains and rocks, fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb; "[12-16]. Now lets put the pieces from Matthew, chapter 24 and Revelation, chapter 6 together.
When We put these pieces together it is clear that Jesus and St. John are describing the same sequence of events. First the coming of anti-christ, then wars and rumours of wars, followed by famines and pestilences, Martyrdom and then the Abomination of desolation and then Great tribulation. After the Great tribulation, there will be the heavenly signs in the Sun, the Moon and the stars. All of these things precede the most glorious event of all, "And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory." (Matt. 24:30) The book of Revelation describes this same glorious but fearsome sight, "And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places. And the kings of the earth....and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains; And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of Him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?"(Rev.6:14-17)
When Jesus comes, "He shall send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other." (Matt 24; 31) "And then shall He send His angels, and shall gather together His elect from the four winds, from the uttermost part of the earth to the uttermost part of heaven." (Mark 13:27) This gathering together is when the rapture takes place."For the Lord Himself shall decend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: And the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up (the rapture) together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: And so shall we ever be with the Lord." (1 Thess. 4:16-17) It is at this time that those who are alive in Christ Jesus shall be changed from mortal to immortal. "Behold, I show you a mystery; We shall not all sleep,(die),but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: For the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed."(1 Cor. 15: 51-52)
From these scripture verses it is perfectly clear that Jesus Christ will return with power and great glory. He will descend visibly, in the clouds, with his Holy Angels. Then in a moment,in the twinkling of an eye, the dead in Christ shall be resurrected and them that are alive in Christ shall be changed from their earthly body into a heavenly body. Then they all shall meet Him in the air, and so shall they live with the Lord forever. The Lord will not descend to earth at this time and plant his feet on the mount of olives; This will come near the end of the seventieth week.
The prophet Joel prophesied of this day about twentyeight hundred years ago."Alas for the day! For the day of the Lord is at hand, and as a destruction from the Almighty shall it come....Blow the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain. Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble; for the day of the Lord cometh, for it is near at hand; A day of darkness and gloominess,a day of clouds and thick darkness, like the morning spread upon the mountains; a great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after it, even to the years of many generations....The earth shall quake before them; the heavens shall tremble; the sun and the moon shall be dark, and the stars shall withdraw their shining: And the Lord shall utter his voice before his army; for his camp is very great; for he is strong who executeth his word; for the day of the Lord is great and very terrible, and who can abide it?....And I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth: blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke. The sun shall be turned into The prophet Amos spoke of that day in this way,<>" Woe unto you that desire the day of the Lord! To what end is it for you? The day of the Lord is darkness, and not light, as a man did flee from a lion and a bear met him; or went into the house, and leaned his hand upon the wall, and a serpent bit him. Shall not the day of the Lord be darkness, and not light? Even very dark, and no brightness in it?" (Amos 5:18-20)
The prophet Isaiah also prophesied of that day,"Enter into the rock, and hide thee in the dust, for fear of the Lord, and for the glory of his majesty....For the day of the Lord of host shall be upon every one who is proud and lofty, and upon every one who is lifted up, and he shall be brought low....And they shall go into the caves of the rocks, and into the holes of the earth, for fear of the Lord, and for the glory of his majesty, when he ariseth to shake terribly the earth." (Isaiah 2:10,12,19) The prophet continues his description of the day of the Lord as a day of Gods wrath, "Wail; for the day of the Lord is at hand; it shall come as a destruction from the Almighty....Behold, the day of the Lord cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate; and he shall destroy the sinners out of it. For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light; the sun shall be darkened in its going forth, and the moon shall not cause its light to shine....Therefore, I will shake the heavens, and the earth shall remove out of its place, in the wrath of the Lord of Host, and in the day of his fierce anger." (Isaiah 13:6,9-11,13)
The prophet Zephaniah, who prophesied of the Babylonian captivity of Israel ( then Juda), also foresaw the day of the Lord as a day of wrath,"That day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of waste and desolation, a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness....Neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver them in the day of the Lords wrath....before the day of the Lord`s anger come upon you. Seek the Lord, all ye meek of the earth, who have kept his ordinances; seek righteousness, seek meekness; it may be ye shall be hidden in the day of the Lord`s anger." (Zeph. 1: 15,18, 2:2,3)
In the old testament, eight prophets used the term,"the day of the Lord. The old testament prophets are not the only men of God that spoke of the day of the Lord. The apostles of Jesus also told of the day of the Lords wrath that would come. Peter quoted Joel`s prophesy of the heavenly signs related to that day in the book of acts.( Acts 2:19-20) See Joel,2:31.
St. Paul spoke of that day, "For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. For when they shall say peace and safety, then sudden destruction cometh upon them." (1 Thess.5:2,3. The apostle Peter also said,"But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens shall melt with fervent heat; the earth also, and the works that are in it, shall be burned up." (2 Peter 3:10) It is obvious from these scriptures that "like a thief in the night" does not mean that that day will come and go with out being noticed, secretly; but it will come quickly upon those who are not looking for it.
Looking back at these scriptures we see that, Using the scriptures above, We can now assemble the puzzle. "The seventieth week" will begin when Israel makes a covenant of peace with the "Prince that shall come", the anti-christ. Soon wars will break out, resulting in famines and pestilences in various places. Many will be killed by the "beast of the earth", which could be literal attacks or may allude to diseases from animals. Revelation 6:8 say`s that a "fourth part of the earth" will be affected by these things. Many bible scholars believe this to mean one-quarter of the earths population, but it may refer to one-quarter of the earths surface area. Because this final seven years is the last week of the seventy weeks that are determined upon Israel, these things will probably be centered around the nations of the middle east, although the whole world will feel their effects. After three and one-half years, the anti-christ will break his covenant with Israel and cause the "Abomination of desolation." This will be the beginning of great tribulation, "For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be."(Matthew 24:21). The anti-christ will go about with fury to persecute and slay all those who will not receive the mark of the beast. His false prophet will have "power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed. And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And no man might buy or sell, save he had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six."(Revelation 13:15-18) Concerning this time of tribulation, an angel revealed to Daniel, "....The people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits (take action). And they that understand among the people shall instruct many: yet they shall fall by the sword, and by flame, by captivity, and by spoil, many days....And some of them of understanding shall fall, to try them, and to purge, and to make them white, even to the time of the end...." (Daniel 11:32-33,35) The word of God does not tell us how long these days of great tribulation will last, but it does say "And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved; but for the elects sake those days shall be shortened." (Matthew 24:22). Immediately after those days of tribulation, there will be great signs in the heavens; the sun will be darkened, the moon will turn to blood and not give its light, and the heavens will be shaken and the stars will fall from heaven. Then will appear the Son of man, Jesus the Christ coming in the clouds with his Holy angels. There will be no missing the coming of Christ, "For as the lightning cometh out of the east , and shineth even unto the west; so shall the coming of the Son of man be."(Matthew 24: 27) At that time those who are living in Christ, will be changed from mortal to immortal in an instant, in the twinkling of an eye, and those who have died in Christ will be raised from the grave, and they all shall meet Jesus in the air. At this same time, a hundred and forty-four thousand of the twelve tribes of Israel will be sealed with the Holy spirit.(Revelation 7:2-8). Those who do not know Jesus as their savior will seek to hide themselves from his face and from the wrath to come. As soon as Gods elect are caught up out of those days of tribulation, the Day of Gods wrath will begin. Jesus said, "And as it was in the days of No`-e,(Noah) so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man. They did eat , they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that No`-e entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all. Like wise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded; But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all. Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed."(Luke 17: 26-30) The Day of the Lord will consist of the wrath that will begin with the seven trumpets; followed by the seven last plagues; "for in them is filled up the wrath of God."(Rev. 15:1). We will discuss these plagues at a later time.
But the Day of the Lord is not only a day of wrath. It will begin wth God`s wrath, but will end as a day of blessings. Toward the end of the wrath, God said through his prophets, "I will also gather all nations and will bring them down into the valley of Je-hosh`-a-phat"....(Joel 3:1) This is today, Mount Megiddo, very near the city of Nazereth. "And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Ar-ma-ged`-don."(Revelation 16:16) "Behold the day of the Lord cometh....For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle....Then shall the Lord go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle. And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall be removed toward the north, and half of it toward the south....And it shall come to pass in that day, that the light shall not be clear, nor dark: But it shall be one day which shall be known to the Lord, not day, nor night: but it shall come to pass, that at evening time it shall be light....and the Lord shall be King over all the earth: in that day shall there be one Lord, and his name one." (Zechariah 14:1-4,6,7,9)
The Day of the Lord is a day of wrath. The "day" is not literally one day, but will begin immediately after the rapture of God`s elect and last until Jesus returns physically to earth to begin His millennial rein. In the book of Revelation under the sixth seal, there is a great earthquake and then the "....sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood: And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth...." These heavenly signs will harold the second coming of the Lord, followed by the rapture and is the beginning of the day of the Lords wrath in which Men from all walks of life will flee to hide
themselves in the mountains and rocks and caves. "For the great day of his wrath is come; and who will be able to stand?"
darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord come." ( Joel 1;15; 2:1-2, 10-11, 30-31)
After all these things, the Apostle John said,"And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband....And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new, And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful....He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone"....(Revelation 21:!-8)
