The Abomination of Desolation

Abomination-new testament (greek, bdelugma- "object of disgust") old testament(aramaic,toebah- "loathesome detestable thing"

Desolation-new testament-(greek,eremosis,from the verb, eremoo, "to make desolate, lay waste") Desolate-old testament (Hebrew,saman- "to be desolate, astonished, appalled, devastated, ravaged")

In 167 B.C. on the 15th day of the Jewish month of Kislev, Antiochus Epiphanes entered into the Jewish temple and erected a pagan altar on the Great alter of burnt sacrifices, The altar was dedicated to the pagan god Zeus Olympus. On the 25th day of Kislev, the first sacrifice, a pig, was offered on the altar. The pig was an unclean animal to the Jews. Both the pagan altar erected in the temple and the sacrifice of a pig would be an abomination.

During his reign, Antiochus ended the Jewish daily sacrifice and outlawed observance of the sabbath and praying to God, He also murdered circumcised infants and their mothers. On the 25th of kiskev, 164 B.C., the Jewish revolt led by Judas Maccabees and his brothers regained control of Jerusalem. The Holy temple was cleansed and rededicated. Hanukkah is the celebration of this event. The abominations of Antiochus Epiphanes was a fore-shadowing of the anti-christ that is to come.

Jesus warned that the Abomination of Desolation spoken of by Daniel the prophet would be one of the signs that would occur before his coming.(Matthew 24: 15) The prophet Daniel said, "....and they shall pollute the santuary of strength, and shall take away the daily sacrifice, and they shall place the abomination that maketh desolate....And the king shall do according to his own will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvelous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done. Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers, nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all."(Daniel 11:31,36-37)

The Apostle Paul spoke of the anti-christ as the "son of perdition" and "that man of sin". "Now we beseech you, brethern, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him,(the rapture)....Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there be a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God." (2 Thessalonians 2:1,3-4) This evil man, the "prince that shall come", will be satan incarnate.

In the beginning, Satan was "the anointed cherub". God said of Satan, speaking through the prophet Ezekiel, "Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee....Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness" (Ezekiel 28:15,17) Because of his pride, Satan wanted to be like the God that created him; "How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High." (Isaiah 14:12-14)

For a short time the anti-christ will rule the world,"And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations. And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the lamb slain from the foundation of the world." His false prophet will cause the people to make an image of the anti-christ, and to worship it; This may be the pagan image that will be erected in the new temple. "And he (the false prophet) exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, (the anti-christ) and causeth them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed. And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire to come down in the sight of men, And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had a wound by a sword, and did live. And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the the image of the beast should be killed."  But Satans dream of being "the most High" will be short lived, "And then shall that wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall destroy with the brightness of his coming" (2 Thessalonians 2:8)

"And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshiped the image. These both were cast alive into the lake of fire burning with brimestone" (Revelation 19:20)

"And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever."(Revelation 20:10)
